“They Should Have Asked Us First!” | Katerina Tutt on the Carpet Gardens
YOU have five days left to vote in the great Carpet Gardens survey – keep the new look, or revert back to how it was.
Last week, Eastbourne Life interviewed Councillor Jim Murray, the man responsible for the changes.
This week, we met Katerina Tutt, owner of Qualisea Restaurant in Victoria Place. She has been a leading figure in this issue from the start.
Katerina was unhappy with the way Eastbourne Borough Council had managed this issue from the start, and her message now is very clear:
“I feel that Eastbourne Borough Council should have asked everyone’s opinions before this massive change, not now.
“We are where we are, and yes we ask residents to vote on what is an absolutely crucial vote for the town.”
In this video, she claims Eastbourne Borough Council spent £300,000. The Council is adamant this is not the case, and says the real figure spent will be £257,000 over 10 years.
You can really see how this is a contentious issue.

The photograph of the carpet gardens in this article must have been taken in the late 1960’s. Just look at the cars. The gardens have not looked like that since i have been in Eastbourne and i have been here since early 1990’s. I think this is the issue with many comments made be Eastbourne residents about our town, especially in social media. The idea that there was some idealistic time, an Eastbourne heyday, where we should remain forever more. These deluded individuals are shaping our politics and holding us back from making the necessary changes to prepare for the future let alone live in the present.
