So once again, opinion in Eastbourne is split…

What do you think of this? Take a look.

It’s a striking new piece of public art coming to Eastbourne seafront.

Commissioned by Towner Eastbourne and funded through the UK Government’s Levelling Up programme, acclaimed artist Rana Begum will create a vibrant new installation in Victoria Place, at the junction of Grand Parade.

The artwork will feature eight panels of toughened, coloured glass arranged in a striking zigzag formation.

As natural light changes throughout the day, the installation will create beautiful geometric reflections and ever-changing shadows, bringing colour, light and movement to this prominent seafront location.

But do you like it?

Some people are arguing that the money could be better spent elsewhere on other priorities in our town.

Here’s some views:

Lisa posted: “Love it – would like to see more contemporary art installations around the town.”

Terry said: “Think it is brilliant for the town – art is for everyone.”

But Gerry posted: “First weekend, it will be smashed to bits.”

And Margaret said: “How is this levelling up Eastbourne? With ever-rising bills and unemployment and empty shops, how does this help? An art installment? Only person who gained was the artist. We would like to hear exactly how this fulfils the criteria for this funding.”

Well, the artwork has received planning approval and has been carefully designed to ensure emergency vehicle access is maintained. Once installed, Towner Eastbourne will maintain the piece.

Installation is expected to be completed by 18 December 2026.

We wait and see…
