A very special event is taking place in Eastbourne on Sunday.
Everyone is invited to the Paul Robeson Celebration and Plaque Unveiling at the Winter Garden at 3.30pm (doors open 3pm).
We have been speaking to Carol Mills, one of the organisers.
This commemorative event includes: live performance and music; speakers; video tributes from across the world; the unveiling of the plaque; a drinks reception with canapés; a Paul Robeson photos and memorabilia display; community and business stands; and a bar.
The Mayor will be attending.
As well as being a much loved bass-baritone singer who performed 10 times at the Winter Garden from the late 1920s until 1939, Paul Robeson was the greatest civil rights activist of his time.
Everywhere he travelled, he spoke up for civil rights and for working people.
And, he stood up against fascism e.g. visiting the Brigaders on the front lines of the Spanish Civil War.
This event promises to be a worthy tribute and honouring of Paul Robeson’s legacy.
