First Serve Café – the Community café at Old Town Recreation Ground – is celebrating its second birthday.

And what a tremendous two years it has been for Craig Wells and the team. They’ve built a first class business.

Community tennis coach Craig formed set2win in May 2020 when he took over the running of Old Town Rec tennis courts in Longland Road.

His dream then was to turn the disused football changing rooms into a cafe – and that was realised back in 2024.

Craig’s message has been the same from the very start: “It’s a real community, friendly and sociable space. Please come and pay us a visit.”

So what have the two years been like?

Craig says: “Two years ago, we took on a tired, run down old changing room block with a dream of creating something special for our community. Looking back now, it’s incredible to see just how far we’ve come.

“Today, First Serve Café has become so much more than just a café. It’s a place where friendships are made, conversations are shared, community groups meet, tennis players refuel, families spend time together, and visitors always receive a warm welcome. It’s become a real hub for Old Town, and we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve all built together.

“A huge thank you goes to our fantastic team. Your passion, hard work and friendly faces are what make First Serve Café the place it is today.

“To every customer who has walked through our doors, grabbed a coffee, enjoyed a meal, supported an event or simply recommended us to a friend… thank you. Every visit has helped us grow, and we genuinely appreciate every single one of you.

“A very special thank you to my wife Sarah. So much of what she does happens behind the scenes, but without her commitment, support and endless hard work, First Serve Café simply wouldn’t be what it is today.

“And to our girls… thank you for growing up alongside the café and for always supporting us. Running a family business isn’t always easy, but you’ve been there every step of the way, and we’re so proud of you both.”
